Last month, my PC took 8 minutes to start.
Eight. Minutes.
I’d hit the power button, walk away and make tea, come back, still loading.” Opening Chrome? Another 3 minutes. Switching between tabs? Frozen. Playing a simple game? Lag every 5 seconds.
My cousin kept repeating "Get a new PC, yours is dead." But I couldn't afford that. A decent PC costs Rs. 80,000 — 150,000 in Pak. I had to make my slow PC work NOW.
If you’ve googled "why is my PC so slow and laggy," you’re likely in the same boat. Your computer was once a speed demon. Now it's painfully slow. Every click takes forever. Programs freeze. Games stutter.
Here is the thing no one tells you — most slow PCs do not need replacing. They need cleaning and maintenance. Quick fixes that take 30-60 minutes but make your PC feel like new.
Here’s what wrote for my PC—I’ll show you exactly how it worked. After these fixes, startup time was down from 8 minutes to 45 seconds. Chrome opened instantly. Games ran smooth.
Why Your PC Becomes Slow and Laggy Over Time
Understand why computers slow down before you try to fix them.
It's not magic. It's not "getting old."" Certain things happen that hurt performance.
Too Many Startup Programs
Every time you install a program, it adds itself to the startup list. Your PC tries to open everything at once when it boots up after you install 20 to 30 programs over the course of months.
My PC was loading:
- Zoom
- Teams
- Chrome
- 3 antivirus programs (yes, three)
- Random software I installed once and forgot
No wonder it took 8 minutes to start.
Hard Drive Nearly Full
Your hard drive needs 15 to 20 percent of its space to be free in order to work properly. Windows has trouble writing temporary files when storage is more than 90% full. Things get slower.
I looked at mine. Almost full. There is only 5 GB of free space out of 500 GB.
That alone was hurting performance.
Outdated or Corrupt Drivers
Windows and your hardware are connected by drivers. In particular, lag in games and videos is caused by outdated graphics drivers.
I had a 2021 graphics driver. Two years without any updates. Games were always stuttering.
Malware and Bloatware
Malware consumes resources while operating in the background. The same is true of bloatware, or pre-installed junk software.
I never installed 14 of the programs on my PC. Random toolbars, Dell bloatware, and "PC optimizer" scams.
Dust and Overheating
Airflow is obstructed by physical dust. The computer overheats. In order to cool itself, the processor throttles down. tanks for performance.
I opened the case of my computer. There is dust everywhere. Fans were totally clogged.
Too Little RAM
Modern Windows and apps will not function well if your RAM is 4GB or less. It becomes impossible to multitask.
I had 4GB on my laptop. Chrome was fully utilized when ten tabs were open.
Why Is My PC So Slow and Laggy: Real Solutions That Work
These fixes are in order from easiest to most involved. Start from the top.
Fix 1: Disable Startup Programs
This single fix cut my startup time from 8 minutes to under 2 minutes.
Steps:
Windows 10/11:
- To access the Task Manager
- Startup tab,
- Right-click the Taskbar.
- View the list of apps that start up.
- Disable programs you don't need by right-clicking on them.
What to disable:
- Teams, Zoom, and Skype (unless you use them frequently)
- Adobe updaters for Epic Games and Steam
- Unrelated utilities
- Anything containing the word "Update"
What NOT to disable:
- Antivirus (Windows Defender is fine)
- Graphics drivers
- Sound drivers
I turned off twenty-three programs. The PC started up five times faster right away.
Fix 2: Free Up Hard Drive Space
The free space should be at least 20%. Here’s how to quickly clean storage.
Delete Temporary Files:
- Press Windows + R
- Type temp → Enter
- Select all files (Ctrl+A)
- Delete
- Press Windows + R again
- Type %temp% → Enter
- Select all → Delete
Freed 6 GB for me instantly.
Remove Unused Programs:
- Settings → Apps
- Sort by Size
- Uninstall anything you don't use
I uninstalled old games, expired trial software, duplicate programs. Freed 35 GB.
Clear Downloads Folder:
Your Downloads folder is likely stuffed with years of detritus.
Open it. Delete everything you don't need.
Freed 12 GB for me.
Use Disk Cleanup:
- Search Disk Cleanup
- Select your main drive (usually C:)
- Check all boxes
- Clean up system files → Check all again
- Delete
Freed another 8 GB.
My PC went from 98% full to 68% full after this. Everything got faster immediately.
Fix 3: Update Graphics Drivers
Outdated drivers cause stuttering and lag.
Steps:
For NVIDIA Graphics:
- Download GeForce Experience app
- Install
- Check for driver updates
- Install latest driver
For AMD Graphics:
- Visit AMD Driver Support
- Enter your GPU model
- Download latest driver
- Install
For Intel Graphics:
- Visit Intel Driver Support
- Download Intel Driver Assistant
- Scan and update
After updating my graphics driver from version 2021 to 2025 version, all my games went from zero chance of hitting 60 FPS with constant stutters to smooth 60 FPS.
Fix 4: Scan for Malware
Malware that is hidden works in the background, consuming your CPU and RAM.
Use Windows Defender (Free, Built-in):
- Windows Security (search in Start menu)
- Virus & threat protection
- Quick scan → Start
Takes 5-10 minutes.
If you want deeper scan:
Download Malwarebytes Free (trustworthy, actually works).
- Install
- Run full scan
- Remove detected threats
I found 23 pieces of malware. Shit like random browser extensions, fake PC cleaners and adware.
Removed them. PC instantly felt snappier.
Fix 5: Disable Visual Effects
Old PC's shows some pretty window animations and effects but these build up a slowness.
Steps:
- Search sysdm.cpl → Enter
- Advanced tab
- Under Performance → Settings
- Select Adjust for best performance
- OR customize: Keep only these checked:
- Show thumbnails instead of icons
- Smooth edges of screen fonts
- Apply
My sluggish PC was 30% faster after this. Windows opened instantly instead of fading in slowly.
Fix 6: Upgrade RAM (Physical Fix)
Adding RAM is the best way to improve your PC if it has 4GB or less.
Check your current RAM:
- Right-click This PC → Properties
- See "Installed RAM"
If you have 4GB or less:
Purchase an additional 4GB or 8GB stick, which in Pakistan costs between Rs. 3,000 and Rs. 6,000.
I went from 4GB to 8GB. It became feasible to multitask. My computer no longer froze when I had 15 tabs open in Chrome.
Where to buy in Pakistan:
- Hafeez Center, Lahore
- Saddar, Karachi
- Local computer shops (bring your PC details)
Fix 7: Clean Physical Dust
Dust blocks airflow. PC overheats. Performance drops.
Steps:
- Turn off PC
- Unplug everything
- Open side panel (usually 2 screws)
- Use compressed air can OR soft brush
- Clean fans, vents, components
- Close panel
Under load, my PC was operating at 85°C. dropped to 60°C after cleaning. There was a noticeable improvement in performance.
Caution: Avoid vacuuming inside of computers. Components may sustain damage from static electricity. Only use compressed air.
Fix 8: Disable Background Apps
Windows 10/11 lets apps run in background even when closed.
Steps:
- Settings → Privacy → Background apps
- Toggle OFF apps you don't need running constantly
OR (Windows 11):
- Settings → Apps → Apps & features
- Click each app → Advanced options
- Set Background app permissions to Never
I turned off eighteen background apps. RAM utilization decreased from 85% to 55%.
Fix 9: Run Windows Update
Missing updates cause bugs and slow performance.
Steps:
- Settings → Update & Security
- Check for updates
- Install everything available
- Restart
There were 47 pending updates on my PC. Performance improved and a number of bugs vanished after installation.
Fix 10: Consider Clean Windows Install (Last Resort)
Your computer feels brand new after a fresh Windows install if nothing else works.
Before doing this:
- Make a backup of all your important files, documents, and photos.
- Prepare your Windows license key.
Steps:
- Download Windows Media Creation Tool from Microsoft
- Create bootable USB
- Boot from USB
- Install Windows clean (select "Custom Install")
I used my old laptop for this. reduced startup time from eight minutes to forty-five seconds. felt like a brand-new computer.
Why These Fixes Work (The Real Reasons)
The majority of online "PC optimization" advice is absurd. Registry cleaners, RAM boosters, "speed up" software—all useless or harmful.
These fixes work because they address actual problems:
Disabling startup programs = Less CPU/RAM usage at boot
Freeing storage = Windows can write temporary files normally
Updating drivers = Hardware communicates with Windows properly
Removing malware = No hidden programs stealing resources
Disabling effects = Less GPU/CPU usage on animations
Adding RAM = More space for programs to run simultaneously
Cleaning dust = Better cooling = No thermal throttling
Background apps = Less RAM/battery drain
These aren't tricks. They're actual solutions to real problems.
How Fast Should My PC Be?
After fixes, expect:
Startup time: 30 seconds - 2 minutes (depends on PC age)
Opening Chrome: 2-5 seconds
Switching programs: Instant
Basic games: Smooth (30-60 FPS depending on PC specs)
My 2019 mid-range PC now:
- Starts in 45 seconds
- Opens Chrome in 3 seconds
- Runs games smoothly
- Handles 20+ Chrome tabs without freezing
Not gaming-PC fast, but perfectly usable for work, browsing, light gaming.
When to Actually Buy a New PC
Sometimes PCs are genuinely too old.
Replace if:
- Running Windows 7 or older (not supported, security risk)
- Processor older than 2012-2013
- Still using traditional hard drive (not SSD) AND can't upgrade
- Physical damage (cracked screen, broken keyboard on laptop)
Don't replace if:
- Just slow from maintenance issues
- Runs Windows 10/11
- Processor from 2014 or newer
My 2019 PC would have been thrown away if I listened to "experts" saying it was dead. Instead, I spent 2 hours on these fixes and saved Rs. 100,000+ on a new PC.

Conclusion
First, if your PC is slow and laggy the two fixes that made my startup time go from 8 minutes to under 2: disable startup programs/free up storage space. Update the graphics drivers, run a malware scan with Windows Defender and disable visual effects are immediate wins. RAM (from 4GB to 8GB) and physical dust cleaning is also a low-cost upgrade with massive impact. Most PCs that are slow don’t need replacing—they need servicing. The fixes range from ₹0-6,000 and can take between 30 to 60 mins in total. My 2019 PC transformed from useless to fast enough for daily work and gaming.
FAQ
Q:Why has my computer suddenly become so slow?
Ans: Generally, Windows updates running on the background, full storage (95%+); and new startup programs introduced by recently installed applications. Look at Task Manager and see CPU/disk usage spikes. Start with freeing up storage and disabling unwanted startup programs first.
Q: How much RAM do I need to eliminate PC lag?
Ans: Minimum 8GB for Windows 10/11. If you have 4GB or less, then making the jump to 8GB is the single best upgrade. 16GB: Good enough for gaming and multitasking. For Rs. 5,000, I moved from 4GB to 8GB and PC was instantly almost 3x faster
Q: Will dusting my PC actually speed it up?
Ans: Yes. Dust clogs airflow, PC over heats and processor throttles (slows itself down to cool down). Before cleaning, my PC was running 185°F (85°C) and now it is at 140°F (60°C). Removing dust with compressed air resulted in a 20-30% performance improvement!
Q: Why does my computer lag when I play games?
Ans: Old graphics drivers, overheating or not enough RAM. Start with updating your GPU drivers (NVIDIA GeForce Experience or AMD Radeon Software) Monitor Task Manager while you game—and if RAM's at 100%, more is needed. Clean dust from PC fans.
Q: Is it possible to make my computer faster without spending money?
Ans: Yes. Turn off programs that start up automatically, get rid of temporary files, uninstall programs you don't use, scan for malware, turn off visual effects, and update Windows. These are completely free and made my computer five times faster. If these don't help enough, only upgrade the RAM.
Q: How can I tell if my computer is too old to fix?
Ans: If it has a processor from before 2012, runs Windows 7 or older, or has major hardware damage, it makes more sense to get a new one. These fixes will work, though, if it has a 2014 or later processor and runs Windows 10 or 11. My 2019 PC seemed dead, but these fixes brought it back to life.
